Porto Port Wine Cellars: Every Gaia Lodge Compared (2026)

A standard visit is a walk through the ageing cellar — the long granite halls where port sits in oak — with a guide or an audio track explaining why the wine is fortified, why it ages here and not in the Douro, and what the words on a label mean. It ends in a tasting room with two or three glasses and a shop. Taylor's runs it self-guided with an audio guide in thirteen languages, about an hour plus thirty minutes for the tasting. Sandeman's basic visit is fifty minutes with three ports. Cálem's is a fifteen-minute interactive museum, a thirty-minute guided walk in one of four languages and two glasses. Cockburn's says about an hour and a half. The differences are the number of glasses, the age of the wines poured and whether a person or a headset is talking.

The wines are what justifies a higher tier. Sandeman's 1790 visit at $40.70 (€35) pours five ports over ninety minutes and its Old Tawnies visit at $61.60 (€53) pours four aged tawnies; Cálem's Tawny experience is $40.70 (€35); Ferreira's Dona Antónia visit is $40.70 (€35) and its Porto Vintage visit $63.90 (€55). If you already like aged tawny, one of those is worth more than two standard visits, which pour the same entry-level ruby twice. If you do not yet know what you like, the standard visit is the right first hour and the Porto Walkers seven-tasting walk samples three houses in one afternoon.

The five words on the tasting mat

Ruby is young port kept in large vats for its colour and fruit; tawny is aged longer in small casks and goes amber and nutty, the 10, 20, 30 and 40 on the label being the average age of the blend; white port is made from white grapes and served cold; LBV, Late Bottled Vintage, is a single year bottled after four to six years in wood and ready to drink; vintage is a single declared year meant to age for decades in the bottle. Taylor's standard tasting pours a Chip Dry extra-dry white, an LBV and a 10-year tawny — three of the five styles in one sitting, the most instructive trio of the standard visits. Cálem's Classic pours a Fine White and a 10-year tawny, two styles.

Taylor's is the exception in Gaia and the reason it appears first on every plan on this site: its visit page says no pre-booking is needed and there is no fixed schedule; an online slot only fixes an arrival window until the next one, and the house asks you to arrive by 15:30 or 16:00 so the hour-long tour and the tasting finish before the cellars close at 18:15. The tasting room stays open to 19:30. Graham's and Cockburn's are the opposite: both pages say visits are by reservation, with 48 and 72 hours' notice for Graham's lunch and dinner formats.

Turning up at either without a booking on a summer afternoon may get you a slot two hours later or none. Sandeman, Ferreira and Cálem sell timed sessions; whether they accept a walk-in is not stated, so treat the online session as the booking. Sandeman and Ferreira also close 12:30–14:00 with the last morning tour at 12:15 — a visitor who reaches Largo Miguel Bombarda at 12:40 finds a closed door, so put Taylor's in that gap.

No plan, no booking, possibly raining: Taylor's. It takes no reservation, its audio guide is in thirteen languages, and the terrace above the cellars looks over Porto, which matters when the rain stops. The climb from the river to Rua do Choupelo is five to ten minutes up, and the house warns that the cellar floors are uneven and steep inside.

A guided hour with a well-reviewed tasting: Graham's at $46.45, whose premium tasting pairs the ports with chocolate, cheese and a pastel de nata, or Cockburn's at $34.84, whose premium option adds a chocolate pairing to a guided hour. Both are 4.8★ across thousands of reviews and both are reservation-only, so the card is the reservation. Graham's is the furthest west of the eight; allow fifteen minutes from the bridge.

Twenty minutes to spare on the riverfront: Cálem. The house is on Avenida Diogo Leite two minutes from the lower deck, the museum is fifteen minutes, the guided walk thirty, and the whole thing fits before a six-bridges boat from the same quay. The Classic visit pours two wines rather than three.

The name you know: Sandeman, fifty minutes and three ports at $26.71 on the platform against $26.70 (€23) on the house's page — the same price to the cent, so the card only adds a calendar. The listing is new, with 22 reviews, and is resold by Grape Ideas rather than the house.

Three houses in one afternoon: Porto Walkers' four-hour port tour at $59.23 — seven tastings across three venues, meeting on the Porto side at the lower deck of the bridge by the granite pillars of the old Ponte Pênsil, in English, 4.8★ from 489 reviews. The listing rules out wheelchair users.

The two you cannot plan around

Ramos Pinto's website renders an age gate and nothing else, and Croft's site describes visits only at its Douro quinta in Pinhão; the Gaia lodge has no official page, no printed hours and no printed price, and cm-gaia.pt does not list it either. Both may well be open; neither can be checked before you cross the river. Walk in if you are passing; do not cross for them.

Two of the six cards sell exactly the house's own visit at the house's own price: Taylor's is $29.03 listed against $29.10 (€25) on taylor.pt, and Sandeman is $26.71 against $26.70 (€23) on sandeman.com. For those two the card adds a date calendar and a 24-hour free cancellation and takes nothing. Cálem's card at $25.55 is the Classic visit at $25.60 (€22) on Blueticket — the same product. Graham's and Cockburn's cannot be compared because neither house prints a standard-visit price: Graham's prints only the $162.70 (€140) lunch and $313.80 (€270) dinner formats; Cockburn's names three tasting tiers and no prices. On those two the platform card is the only published price, and a reservation is required either way.

None of the cards includes the crossing from Porto. The Gaia cable car from the Jardim do Morro to the quay is $8.14 (€7) one way; the metro across the upper deck to Jardim do Morro is a Zone 2 fare of $1.63 (€1.40) on an Andante card; the lower deck is free and puts you at Sandeman's door in two minutes. Getting around has the zone logic.

One house is an afternoon; two is a full one; three is the Porto Walkers tour or a day you have given to Gaia. The lodges close their cellars between 17:00 and 18:15 depending on the house and the season, so the last visit of the day starts around 16:00 wherever you are, and the river terraces are where the evening goes after that.

• Neither Graham's nor Cockburn's prints a price for its standard visit; the only published figures at Graham's are the $162.70 (€140) lunch and $313.80 (€270) dinner formats (grahams-port.com booking page; cockburns.com/visitus).
• The Croft lodge in Gaia has no official page at all; croftport.com describes visits only at Quinta da Roêda in Pinhão, and cm-gaia.pt does not list the lodge (croftport.com contacts and visits pages, read in Q3 2026).
• Cálem's cheapest visit pours two wines, not three, and its child ticket for ages 6 to 17 is $11.62 (€10), with under-fives free — the only lodge on this page with a printed child fare below Taylor's $10.46 (€9) for 8 to 17 (cavescalem.byblueticket.pt; taylor.pt tariff PDF).

Graham's Vinum restaurant is the one with published figures: the visit-with-lunch format is $162.70 (€140) and the dinner format $313.80 (€270) per person, booked 48 and 72 hours ahead, per the house's booking page. Cockburn's runs a 'Cask to Kitchen' lunch with the Sagardi kitchen that search snippets price at €75 and €84 menus; the figure is not on the visit page we read, so it is unverified here. Taylor's terrace serves ports by the glass and prints no prices.

For a meal that does not cost a visit, the Vila Nova de Gaia page lists the quay, and where to eat has the francesinha maths for the Porto side.

On the one-day plan the cellar is Taylor's after the Ribeira, because it takes no booking and its terrace ends the day above the bridge. On two days the second afternoon can hold a riverfront house and the cable car. The Douro Valley day is a different thing — quintas, table wine, the river at Pinhão — and does not replace a Gaia cellar, since the ageing and the blending happen here.
