Porto in 1 Day

Be on Rua das Carmelitas 144 for the 09:00 slot with the voucher on your phone; the door works by time slot, and by ten the pavement outside is a queue that moves in batches. What you hold is a Ticket-Voucher at $18.54 (€15.95) from age 4, deductible in full against a Livraria Lello Editions book inside, not against merchandising; under-4s go in free with proof of age. The FAQ says the same-day voucher can be bought up to 30 minutes before closing, subject to availability, and the terms and conditions say a physical visit needs 24 hours' notice, and the two official pages contradict each other, so book the day before and let the contradiction be someone else's problem.

Thirty to forty minutes at opening, longer once the room fills. The third-party $9.30 (€8) to $13.95 (€12) 'Silver' tiers are resellers; the Lello tickets page has the official screens, and the entry and foundation combo at $34.90 (€30) is the only platform product, rated 4.0 by 8,159 travellers and non-refundable, which is why it is a fallback and not the first choice.

Three minutes uphill past the Carmo church to the tower on Rua de São Filipe de Nery. One ticket at $11.62 (€10) covers the tower and the museum, students pay $8.14 (€7), under-10s go free, and the last entry is 30 minutes before closing; open 09:00 to 19:00 every day of the year, to 23:00 on the Easter, summer and Christmas dates when a $5.81 (€5) tower-only night ticket exists. The step count is not printed on the official site, whatever the blogs say.

The Clérigos ticket online is the same $11.62 (€10), rated 4.6 by 7,316 travellers, and buys nothing but the certainty in August. Forty minutes for the climb and the museum rooms; the Clérigos page has the combo at $29.10 (€25) with the Bolsa and the Misericórdia museum, which pays for itself only if you take all three.

Down Rua de 31 de Janeiro and across to Rua Formosa, ten minutes. The rebuilt Bolhão is free, open Monday to Friday 08:00 to 20:00 and Saturday 08:00 to 18:00, closed every Sunday and public holiday, and the stalls are at their fullest before noon; the upper-floor restaurants run to midnight Monday to Saturday. Two hundred metres up Rua de Santa Catarina the Capela das Almas wears its 1929 tile skin on the outside, free to look at any hour, with the interior open Monday to Friday 07:30 to 17:30 between the hourly morning Masses; the Capela das Almas page has the Saturday and Sunday splits.

The Majestic at number 112 is open Monday to Saturday 09:00 to 23:00, closed Sunday, and prints no prices on its site; the Majestic page says whether the wait is worth it. Twenty-five minutes for all three, then downhill to the station.

Rua de Sá da Bandeira runs down to Praça de Almeida Garrett and the station's entrance hall, where the blue-and-white tile panels of the 1900s cover the walls. There is no ticket and no door; the hall is open with the station, which is a fact we observed rather than one CP prints, because its station page renders nothing. Ten minutes is enough, and the Porto Welcome Center is in the same square at number 27 if you want a paper map.

The São Bento page has the panels explained; the Sé is five minutes uphill.

Up Rua de Dom Hugo or the steps from the station to the Terreiro da Sé. The church is free; the cloister, the museum and the tower are one $3.49 (€3) ticket, with no per-area split printed on the DRCN page, and the tower shuts 30 minutes before the building: April to October 09:00 to 18:30 with the tower to 18:00, November to March 09:00 to 17:30 with the tower to 17:00. Mass is at 11:00 and the cathedral closes for Christmas and Easter on dates the diocese does not print, which is why the plan arrives at 11:35 and not 11:00.

The tiled cloister and the tower view over the roofs to the river take 40 minutes. The one-hour guided tour with entry at $18.60 (€16) is the version with the building explained, rated 4.7 by 338 travellers; the Sé tickets page explains why only one price is official.

Downhill through the Barredo lanes to Rua Ferreira Borges, eight minutes on steps. The Bolsa is visited only on the venue's 30-minute guided tour, $16.27 (€14) adult, $11.04 (€9.50) for students and seniors, under-12s free, open 09:00 to 18:30 year-round on both official pages though an older Portuguese snippet printed a winter lunch break, so a winter visit should re-read the page that morning. The language of your tour is set by order of arrival across Portuguese, Spanish, French and English, which means the wait at the desk is the unknown: at 12:30 on a weekday it was short when we read the calendar, and a group ahead of you can push it to the next English departure.

There is no Bolsa ticket on the platform; the Bolsa tickets page explains the queue-by-language system, and the four-hour monumental walk that passes it is a French-language tour whose $46.50 (€40) does not include the palace entry, which is another €10 at the door, so it is not the way in.

Next door, the gilded Gothic church and the catacombs beneath. The new official site prints hours, 09:00 to 20:00 from 1 April to 30 September and to 19:00 the rest of the year, closed 25 December, but no ticket price, and the old domain fails its certificate, so the church-and-museum figure the blogs give is not one we can print; the São Francisco page records what is and is not published. Thirty minutes inside if you take it, then two minutes down to the Ribeira square for lunch on the quay; the where to eat page names the places we can cite with their source and year.

East along the quay to the bridge's lower deck, the road level, with the pavement on the downstream side and the river 10 m below. Both decks are free to walk; the upper deck carries Metro line D and its pedestrian passage is guaranteed even during track works, and the only routine closure is the São João night of 23 June, from noon until four the next morning. Eight minutes across to the Cais de Gaia, then the climb up Rua do Choupelo to Taylor's at number 250, about ten minutes and steeper than it looks; Cálem on the quay is the alternative in the plan-B table.

Taylor's takes no bookings and runs no schedule: the visit is a self-guided audio tour in 13 languages, about an hour in the cellars and 30 minutes in the tasting room with three ports, $29.10 (€25) adult, $10.46 (€9) for 8 to 17s, $72.10 (€62) for two adults and two children, under-8s free. Cellars open 10:00 to 18:15 daily and the tasting room to 19:30, closed 23 June, 24 to 25 December and from 31 December to 1 January, and the lodge's own advice is to arrive by 15:30 or 16:00 for the full visit, which is why this stop sits at 14:50 and not after the cable car. The Taylor's visit on the platform is the same $29.10 (€25) as the door, rated 4.6 by 4,714 travellers, and is worth buying only for the date fixed on the calendar.

Graham's and Cockburn's both require a reservation; the port wine cellars page compares all eight, and with one day the lodge that takes walk-ins wins.

Back down to the quay and west along the Cais de Gaia to the lower station, ten minutes. The cable car takes five minutes up to the Jardim do Morro beside the bridge's upper deck, $8.14 (€7) one way, $11.62 (€10) return, children 5 to 12 $4.07 (€3.50) and $5.81 (€5), a family of four $26.10 (€22.50) return; the ticket is valid 30 days, so a return bought now can be used tomorrow. Hours follow date bands, not seasons: 10:00 to 20:00 from 26 April to 24 September, to 19:00 until 24 October, to 18:00 through the winter, closed only on 25 December, and the last boarding is not printed on the timetable page.

It is on neither the Andante card nor the Porto.CARD. The walking tour with Lello, boat and cable car at $69.70 (€60) bundles this ride with a Lello slot and a river cruise for anyone who wants the whole day booked as one thing, rated 4.7 by 1,279 travellers; the cable car page has the date bands in full.

Three minutes up from the cable car to the terrace in front of the Serra do Pilar monastery, the round church of the UNESCO listing, which is closed for PRR works with no reopening date on any official page; the culturaportugal.gov.pt page still prints its $2.32 (€2) and $4.65 (€4) tickets and Tuesday-to-Sunday hours with no closure notice, and is stale. The esplanade outside is public space, open always, and it is the view of the whole loop you have just walked. The Serra do Pilar page has the closure as we found it.

Then across the upper deck, 60 m above the water with the metro passing behind a railing, twelve minutes back to the Sé side; the Luís I bridge page says which side to walk. From here Rua de Dom Hugo drops to the quay in ten minutes for the boat, or the Batalha square is five minutes level for the fado.

The Six Bridges cruise leaves from both banks every hour or so, 50 minutes on a rabelo-style boat to the river mouth and back for $20.90 (€18), rated 4.2 by 16,287 travellers, and the honest line is that it is the cheapest way onto the water, not the best boat; the 7 Bridges cruise with port and a sunset option at $46.50 (€40), rated 5.0 by 1,756, is the one to pick if the evening is the point, and the sailboat with wine and charcuterie at $62.80 (€54) the one for two people. The alternative is a chair: the live fado show with a glass of port at $23.20 (€20) runs an hour, rated 4.8 by 6,931, and the tavern fado at $17.43 (€15) is the smaller room; the nightlife page has the sittings by hour. The porto tours hub has every boat on the site on one table.

The bookshop and the tower keep their weekday hours on Sunday, 09:00 to 19:30 and 09:00 to 19:00, and the Sunday slots at Lello are the ones that go first in the school holidays because the market is not competing for the morning. Run the two exactly as in the main plan and be off the ridge by 10:30.

West along Rua de Dom Manuel II, eight minutes, to the gardens that replace the Bolhão on a Sunday. Free, open 08:00 to 21:00 from April to September and 08:00 to 19:00 from October to March, with peacocks on the lawns and the river terrace at the bottom, which is the wider view of the Douro the bridge does not give. Forty minutes, including the walk down to the terraces.

The Palácio de Cristal page has the trams that pass the gate. Then back east along the ridge and down to the station, fifteen minutes, skipping the Santa Catarina street entirely; the Capela das Almas tiles are on the outside and can be seen on the way to the fado in the evening, when the street is open even if the chapel is not.

The station hall first, ten minutes, then up to the cathedral at about noon, when the 11:00 Mass has ended and the cloister ticket desk is selling again. The $3.49 (€3) ticket, the hours and the tower cut-off are as in the main plan; the church itself is free and open, but during Mass the visit is the service, not the building. From the Bolsa onward the Sunday day is the weekday day, fifteen minutes later: the guided tour at 12:45, lunch on the quay, the lower deck, Taylor's by 15:00 with its arrive-by-16:00 advice still holding, the cable car and the terrace, the upper deck home. Serralves is free on the first Sunday of each month but is 5 km west and belongs to the two-day plan; no other museum in Porto has a free Sunday for visitors, since August 2024 the free days are for residents only.
